y autocirrect isnt teh end of teh world

So the other day I was glancing at the globe and mail (that’s a newspaper by the way, those daily dead-tree publications that lack hyperlinks) and they had an article about how we live in an age of “good enough” in regards to spelling and grammar. When auto correct is that good, why bother reading it over? So what if that email to a friend is riddled with typos? They’ll understand what you meant just fine. Ultimately the writer comes to the conclusion that as a result everything is ruined forever. Ok maybe I’m exaggerating just a bit, the final thought was more along the lines that literature and poetry were being eroded by this carelessness.

Man, that is sooooo totallyy rong! Seiouslu wtf? Y wood u conclude that cuz ppl liek using txt spk and rely on spelll chekc that bookz n stuffs will be hurted?

Firstly, language is not dying, it is evolving. People are more lax with grammar and spelling because we write so much more, and read so much more than at any other time in history. Sure maybe less effort is put into the writing itself, but that is because speed is crucial. Instant messaging demands quick responses because typing whole words takes too long and the rhythm of a conversation is destroyed.
Secondly typing on a cellphone or other mobile device almost demands the use of poor grammar and plentiful abbreviations. It is way too hard to go back and fix a typo in a text or to alter your grammar when you just hit the 140 character mark

But finally I think that the conclusion that literature or poetry will disappear because people are getting lazy with grammar and  spelling is false because artists always find a way to express themselves. Language (and by extension grammar) are merely tools that artists use to create art. If there is a will there’s a way as the saying goes and this will certainly not change when everybody forgets how to spell.

  1. I have been surfing online greater than 3 hours today, yet I by no means found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth sufficient for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content as you probably did, the web will be a lot more helpful than ever before.
